Isabelline Shrike

Isabelline Shrike

Lanius isabellinus

This interesting bird appeared in Noordhollands Duinreservaat on November 13th 2014.
It was seen at least until November 18th and was filmed this day by Sjaak Schilperoort. It showed features of a Red-tailed Shrike. It was caught twice at the ringing facility, but even having the bird in the hand did not give full clarity on its id. It is either a Daurian Shrike or the much rarer Red-tailed Shrike, with the common opinion favoring the rarer choice. Hopefully the DNA sequence will reveal the true identity. I made sure to check out this bird before the final verdict comes, as this may still take a while.
